Our Farm & Mission

Our free-range pork is bred, reared, butchered and packaged on our farm here in Kenya. Our pigs live wholesome lives with plenty of space to roam and are cared for under the highest animal welfare standards. From delicious pork tenderloin and sausages to the perfect pork roasting joints, we produce high quality free-range Kenyan pork that you can trust.

A unique and very important aspect of Highland Castle Farms is the innovative farming processes we use to supplement our pig’s diet with high protein nutrients from our Black Soldier Fly Project. Read more about this project and how it works holistically with our sister carbon-neutral rose farm,Tambuzi, below.

Climate Friendly Farming

Black Soldier Fly Project

On conventional pig farms, the usual feed to ensure a high protein diet for pigs is soya, a product that often causes significant deforestation and must be imported into Kenya. Here at Highland Castle Farms, we have made a conscious decision to supplement our pig’s feed with black soldier fly larvae - a sustainable and nutritious option that our pigs love! Another outcome of the process is an organic fertiliser that the Tambuzi Rose Farm uses for their carbon-neutral flower farming - Taking an environmentally damaging waste product and turning it into two high-value sustainable products—supporting a circular farming process.

The Black Soldier Fly Farming Process

  • The Love Cage

The love cage is a netted enclosure with a comrade of Black Soldier Flies ( BSF).

The BSF mate in the love cage, and lay eggs into sheltered eggies. Shortly after having laid the eggs, the female dies naturally.

The eggs are harvested from the eggies and relocated to a temperature and humidity regulated room where they will hatch into larvae.

  • From Waste to Taste

Once hatched, the larvae are transferred to " larveros " concrete planters.

Here, the young larvae feed on biowaste from local communities.

After 12 days of breaking down biowaste, the BSF larvae are ready to be harvested. At this point, they have reached their maximum weight and nutritional value of ±45% protein, ready for our pigs to enjoy.

  • Sustainable Larvae & Frass

An amazing organic fertiliser is created as the larvae feed on and break down the waste. The final step is separating the larvae from this organic fertiliser so that both products can go on to work their magic in growing gorgeous roses and healthy pigs.

Taking an environmentally damaging waste product and turning it into two high-value sustainable products—supporting a circular farming process.
